“The President would have left American students in a foreign jail because their families didn't lavish sufficient praise on him. How can someone in such a big office be so small?” Schiff tweeted.

Earlier Sunday, Trump lashed out at LaVar Ball, whose son LiAngelo Ball was among the three players arrested on shoplifting charges during a team trip to China earlier this month.

Trump took credit for the players’ release after he brought up the incident to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

However, LaVar Ball downplayed Trump’s role in the matter, telling ESPN on Friday: “What was he over there for? Don’t tell me nothing. Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out.”

Trump responded Sunday by saying LaVar Ball is “unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal, I should have left them in jail!”

Schiff is the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, which is one of multiple congressional committees looking into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

The California Democrat has frequently gone after Trump on Twitter. On the anniversary of Trump’s election win, Schiff took to the social media platform to list the ways in which he believes Trump is the “worst president in modern history.”
