Former Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) on Wednesday offered praise for special counsel Robert Mueller, calling for him to ignore his critics.

“I just want to thank Robert Mueller for his service. Thank you for serving this country and doing your best to defend the rule of law,” he tweeted.{mosads}

“Most Americans have faith in you. Ignore your critics and pursue the truth.”

President Trump has in the past referred to the special counsel probe into Russia’s election interference as a “witch hunt” and has denied collusion between his campaign and Russia.

Other Republicans have also cast doubt on the integrity of Mueller’s team and speculation has swirled over whether Trump will fire Mueller.

The White House has repeatedly denied Trump is considering firing Mueller or ending the investigation.

A number of Republicans earlier this month also said it would be wise to let Mueller continue his investigation.

A report Wednesday said Mueller’s team has started the process of questioning various Republican National Committee (RNC) staffers that worked with the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election about the party’s digital apparatus.

This past weekend, Trump lashed out at FBI leadership, particularly targeting FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe over Democrats’ past donations to his wife’s political campaign.

His attacks on McCabe came after a report revealed the deputy director was planning to retire from the FBI in the coming months as Republican lawmakers accuse him and other FBI officials of bias against Trump.

The president has stepped up his attacks on the agency in recent weeks, saying earlier this month that the bureau’s reputation was in “tatters.”

Walsh, who supported Trump’s campaign, has in the past been critical of Trump’s actions, warning the president earlier this month that the attacks on FBI leadership were going to “bite you in the ass.”
