Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) on Tuesday blasted Democrats who didn’t stand and applaud during President Trump’s State of the Union address last week.
Tenney said on CNN that while she wouldn’t call the behavior “treasonous” like Trump did, she would say it was “un-American, and they don’t love our country.”
“I sat on the Democratic side and I was frankly appalled by the behavior of the Democrats,” she said. “I was inundated with text messages and emails from Democrats all across my district saying how ashamed they were of the Democratic Party, [Senate Minority Leader Charles] Schumer [N.Y.], [House Minority Leader] Nancy Pelosi [Calif.] telling Democrats to sit.”
She added that the Democrats didn’t stand because it was Trump delivering the speech, claiming that Republicans had stood when former President Obama mentioned American values during his addresses before Congress.
“I thought it was terrible that they didn’t clap for very American ideas, and why? Why not? They’re just about ‘resist,’ and what does ‘resist’ mean? Obstruct,” Tenney said.
Tenney’s comments come one day after Trump ripped Democrats as “treasonous” for not applauding during his State of the Union address.
“Can we call that treason? Why not?” Trump said. “They certainly didn’t seem to love our country very much.”
