Swalwell rips Trump: 'He is a lying president and a lying president is a weak president'
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) on Wednesday ripped into President Trump, calling him a "lying president" and a "shadowy operator."
Swalwell, appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," noted that Trump earlier this year denied knowledge of payments during his 2016 campaign to two women who claimed they had affairs with him.
Trump has since acknowledged those payments, and federal prosecutors in New York said last week that Trump directed his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, to make the payments.
"Look, he is a lying president and a lying president is a weak president," Swalwell said.
Swalwell also called Trump a "shadowy operator" and said it will likely be more important for Democrats to investigate Trump's foreign policy than it will be to focus on the illegal payments.
"It's probably more important to look at how he has conducted himself as it relates to Russia, the Saudis and Chinese, because I think if he was willing to work in such a shadowy way to pay off a few women who were making these allegations, he is probably working that way in much bigger issues," Swalwell said.
"And that's what we should focus on as we conduct these investigations, which is he is making foreign policy and domestic policy decisions based on his own personal financial interests," Swalwell added later in the interview. "And so he's putting transactions above basic American values."
