Ocasio-Cortez raises money for transgender youth on video game live stream
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Sunday night raised money for transgender youth by appearing on a video game live stream on Twitch.
Ocasio-Cortez appeared on a livestream, which had been going on for 50 hours and raised more than $200,000 by the time she called in, by YouTuber Harry Brewis, LGBTQ+ outlet Pink News reported.
{mosads}Brewis over the weekend launched a livestream of video game Donkey Kong 64 to raise money for Mermaids, a charity that donates money to transgender children.
Ocasio-Cortez was one of multiple guests that made called into the livestream throughout the day, including transgender activist and former Maryland Senate candidate Chelsea Manning.
“Trans rights are civil rights are human rights,” Ocasio-Cortez said during the appearance, according to Pink News.
She spoke about the lack of protections for transgender people at a federal level, saying, “It’s important that we do talk about these issues in the economic frame, but not let go of the fact that discrimination is a core reason for economic hardship.”

Ocasio-Cortez made the appearance after responding to director Aaron Sorkin earlier in the day saying that he believes young Democratic freshmen in Congress should “stop acting like young people.”
Sorkin said he believes Democrats should say the party is “not just about transgender bathrooms, that that’s a Republican talking point they’re trying to distract you with.”
“We wouldn’t need to talk about bathrooms at all if we acted like adults, washed our hands + minded our own business instead of trying to clock others,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote after a thread about Sorkin’s comments. “Going by track record, I’d feel safer in a bathroom w/ a trans woman than a powerful male executive any day of the week.”
