"Stephen Miller is a white nationalist. The fact that he still has influence on policy and political appointments is an outrage," Omar tweeted.

Miller reportedly said he didn't support the appointment because Vitiello, who was named acting head of ICE last year, wasn't fully in favor of shuttering the border.

Trump previously nominated Vitiello, but the White House on Friday sent paperwork to Congress withdrawing the nomination. Trump told reporters that he was "going in a tougher direction."

"We’re going in a little different direction," Trump said Friday. "Ron’s a good man, but we’re going in a tougher direction."
