“You are changing this country by having the courage to stand up to the rich and powerful,” Sanders tweeted along with a photo of the two lawmakers smiling. “Together we'll make health care a right and ensure a thriving planet for future generations.”

The two progressive lawmakers have been close political allies and have supported each other on key pieces of legislation, including Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal and Sanders’s "Medicare for All."

Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, turned 30 on Sunday.

The freshman lawmaker volunteered for Sanders’s 2016 presidential campaign and later pointed to working on the longtime senator’s presidential campaign for getting her involved in politics.

She previously said that Sanders gave her advice on committee assignments and how to navigate Congress as she entered in 2019 after a surprising primary victory the year before.
