Pelosi says ‘solemn observance’ planned on Jan. 6

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced that her office is planning a series of events to commemorate the one year anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol building, including a “prayerful vigil” and a discussion among historians.

In an email to Democratic lawmakers, Pelosi said that “while the House will not be in session that week, a number of Members have expressed interest in being involved in commemoration activities.

She added that preparations are underway for a full program of events, including the discussion among historians, “an opportunity for Members to share their experiences and reflections from that day; and a prayerful vigil in the evening.”

Pelosi added that the “solemn observance” will be livestreamed, so that members can participate remotely, while also asking those planning to attend in person to email her office.

The Speaker’s statement comes just days after the White House said it also intends to commemorate the anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

Press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Tuesday that the specifics of the event were still being worked out.

“Jan. 6 was one of the darkest days in our democracy,” Psaki said. “It was a day when our nation’s capital was under attack and I think there’s no question you’ll see us commemorate that day.”

Almost one year ago, pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol to try to halt the certification of President Biden’s electoral victory. Multiple people died in the chaos and several were injured, including police officers from the Capitol Police and Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police.

So far, more than 727 people have been charged in connection with the Capitol riot, while dozens more have been subpoenaed by a House select committee investigating the attack.
