Author Sam Harris to Bill Maher: ‘The left has allied itself with Islamists’

Host Bill Maher and author Sam Harris agreed on HBO's "Real Time" that the liberal establishment needs to stand up to Islamic extremism more, with Harris declaring "the left has allied itself with Islamists."

“You don't have to be a fascist or a racist or even a Trumpian to not want to import people into your society who think cartoonists should be killed for drawing the prophet," Harris told Maher on Friday.

"In the immediate aftermath of Orlando we have [Hillary] Clinton talking about gun control, only, and then admonishing the whole country not to be racist," Harris, the bestselling author of "Islam and the Future of Tolerance" continued.

"The left has allied itself with Islamists and closet Islamists," he added.

Maher, a staunch critic of Democrats on this particular issue, said parallels between the Ku Klux Klan to ISIS and al-Qaeda need to stop.

"And again, size matters," Maher said. "There are entire terrorists armies -- ISIS, obviously, Boko Haram, al-Qaeda. People talk about the KKK like it's an equivalent. The KKK is not seeking nuclear weapons."

Both also agreed President Trump's recent executive order on immigration and refugees is a "terrible idea."

Maher has often featured the topic of Islamic extremism on his weekly program, warning Democrats that the party must change its overall reluctance to use the same characterizations Republicans use.

"Just say 'Islamic terrorism,'" Maher implored on his program in May of 2016. "Just say those words and you'll win the election. Avoid those words and you're going to lose the election."
