LA Times on Trump: Nothing prepared us for this 'trainwreck'

The Los Angeles Times slammed President TrumpDonald John TrumpTrump fires intelligence community inspector general who flagged Ukraine whistleblower complaint Trump organization has laid off over 1000 employees due to pandemic: report Trump invokes Defense Production Act to prevent export of surgical masks, gloves MORE in a new editorial, arguing that his "unpredictable" and "reckless" behavior is “the most worrisome” part of his presidency and that “nothing prepared us for the magnitude of this trainwreck.”

Its editors on Sunday criticized Trump for his attempts to repeal and replace ObamaCare, for vowing to erect a border wall and for questioning the courts.

“In a matter of weeks, President Trump has taken dozens of real-life steps that, if they are not reversed, will rip families apart, foul rivers and pollute the air, intensify the calamitous effects of climate change and profoundly weaken the system of American public education for all,” they wrote.

“These are immensely dangerous developments which threaten to weaken this country’s moral standing in the world, imperil the planet and reverse years of slow but steady gains by marginalized or impoverished Americans,” they added.

The newspaper promised to focus on three of the president’s traits: his “shocking lack of respect” for institutions, his "utter lack of regard" for the truth and his "scary willingness" to propagate alt-right conspiracy theories.

Its editors called on voters and lawmakers alike to hold the president accountable.

“Voters must turn out for elections. Members of Congress — including and especially Republicans — must find the political courage to stand up to Trump,” they wrote. “Courts must safeguard the Constitution. State legislators must pass laws to protect their citizens and their policies from federal meddling.”

The Sunday editorial is the first in a series, the newspaper said.
