David Martosko, the Daily Mail’s U.S. political editor, has backed out of talks with the White House to join President Trump’s communications team. 

“I was honored to briefly discuss the possibility of joining President Trump’s administration as press secretary or in another senior role,” he said in a statement on Tuesday. “At this time, however, I have chosen not to take the discussions further.”

“I have one of the best jobs in political journalism, and I look forward to continuing in that role with DailyMail.com,” he added.

The announcement comes amid reports that Spicer is considering stepping down from the press secretary post and could move to another position on the White House communications team. 

{mosads}Politico reported on Monday that Spicer was interviewing potential candidates to take his place at the briefing room lectern, reaching out to Fox News contributor Laura Ingraham for the press secretary job and Martosko for the communications director post.

The communications director job has been vacant since the end of May, when former communications director Michael Dubke resigned. Spicer has since been handling both roles. 

Martosko was also reportedly interviewed for a White House job in December.
