CNN has signed former Clinton White House press secretary Joe Lockhart as a political commentator.

Lockart, 58, announced the news on Twitter.

"Started today doing political commentary as a new contributor for @CNN. Glad to be back working for CNN after a 30 year break," Lockhart wrote.

Lockhart served as a political commentator for CNN following his role as press secretary for 1984 presidential nominee Walter Mondale.

He said earlier this year that he was stepping down after two years as the NFL’s chief communications officer and primary spokesman to spend more time with his family and do political commentary.

The New York native is the son of the late Raymond Lockhart, who served as an NBC News producer for 36 years.
