Tributes for longtime political commentator and columnist Charles Krauthammer came pouring in on Twitter Friday from members of the media after the popular Fox News analyst revealed that he only has “a few weeks to live.”

In a letter on Friday, Krauthammer said that he was in the final stages of a losing fight against cancer.

“My doctors tell me their best estimate is that I have only a few weeks left to live,” Krauthammer, 68, wrote to colleagues, viewers and readers. “This is the final verdict. My fight is over.”

Social media reacted with grief over the news, which came just hours after CNN reported the death of 61-year-old Anthony Bourdain. Bourdain died by apparent suicide in his hotel room in France, where he was filming an episode of his show, “Parts Unknown.”

“Charles has been a profound source of personal and intellectual inspiration for all of us at Fox News,” Fox News and 21st Century Fox Executive Chairman Rupert Murdoch wrote. “His always principled stand on the most important issues of our time has been a guiding star in an often turbulent world, a world that has too many superficial thinkers vulnerable to the ebb and flow of fashion, and a world that, unfortunately, has only one Charles Krauthammer.”

“His words, his ideas, his dignity and his integrity will resonate within our society and within me for many, many years to come.”

Can I just say, Krauthammer is a true gentleman. Thanks to @BretBaier, I got to be on panels with Charles. I was always the youngest and least experienced. And I was intimidated by it. But Charles made me feel like as though I was worthy. He made time for people and their ideas.

“Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace echoed Murdoch’s sentiment on Krauthammer, whom he had worked with at the network’s Washington, D.C., bureau. 

“The thing that I admire and admired most about Charles, though, is that in a world in which we all, there’s a tendency to fall into tribes here — in this camp or you’re in this camp — Charles’ camp was his honesty, his values, his conviction,” Wallace told anchor Sandra Smith on “America’s Newsroom.” 

“He could be lacerating and going after the excesses of liberalism, he could be just as tough as going after the betrayals of his conservatism,” Wallace added before addressing Krauthammer directly. 

“Charles, if you’re out there, if you’re watching this with your beloved wife Robin and your son Daniel, who I know have been such a support to you in so many ways, I want you to know that I love you, I flatter myself to consider myself so honored to consider myself a colleague of yours. You are a great man.” 

Charles Krauthammer is obviously brilliant, courageous and principled, but what leaps to mind is his boyish joy watching game after game at Nat’s Park. The sweetness of his heart matches the rigor of his intellect.

Krauthammer, a nightly staple next to anchor Bret Baier on “Special Report,” has not been on Fox News since August 2017 after undergoing surgery to remove a tumor in his abdomen.

The former physician was permanently paralyzed from the waist down after a diving accident his freshman year at Harvard Medical School at age 22, though he still went on to graduate.

“I leave this life with no regrets. It was a wonderful life full and complete with the great loves and great endeavors that make it worth living,” he wrote in the letter released Friday. “I am sad to leave, but I leave with the knowledge that I lived the life that I intended.”
