'NBC Nightly News' records lowest-rated season ever; still wins younger demographic

"NBC Nightly News" suffered its lowest-rated season ever, according to Nielsen Media Research, but still topped ABC and CBS in the key younger demographic that advertisers covet most.

The Lester Holt-anchored program dropped to an average of 8.153 million total viewers per evening, which marks its lowest average since Nielsen began tracking via electronic data in 1991.

That was still good enough for second place behind ABC's "World News Tonight" with David Muir, which delivered 8.637 million viewers for the 2017-2018 season. "The CBS Evening News" with Jeff Glor was third with 6.209 million total viewers.

NBC did score 1.851 million viewers in the 25-54 demographic, however, topping ABC and CBS in the category for the 22nd consecutive season.

ABC's newscast was up 4 percent in total viewers from last year to record its highest ratings in 13 years.
