In an editorial published on Election Day, USA Today urged voters to vote "Trump's lap dogs" out of office.

The piece said Republicans in Congress had failed to act as a check on President TrumpDonald John TrumpStephen Miller: Trump to further crackdown on illegal immigration if he wins US records 97,000 new COVID-19 cases, shattering daily record Biden leads Trump by 8 points nationally: poll MORE and called on voters to elect Democrats.

It said the "current GOP-controlled House and Senate" had been "little but obedient lap dogs to President Donald Trump."

"This would be troubling under any circumstances. But it is especially so now with a president who careens from gross incompetence to troubling executive overreach; who tolerates, even encourages, corrupt behavior; and who tries to govern through a toxic mix of self-adulation, divisive rhetoric, fear-mongering, outright lies and juvenile name-calling."

USA Today cited "politicized attacks" on the Justice Department, encouraging "hate groups with incendiary language" and erratic relations with North Korea as things Congress should check.

"It needs lawmakers who will unite, not divide; who do not regard compromise as a dirty word; and who will stand up for what is a co-equal branch of government with the presidency."

"The current House and Senate have failed miserably at their duty to conduct oversight hearings and to put guardrails around a reckless president whose own aides have questioned his fitness," the editorial said.

"It is time to elect a Congress that will do better."
