Smollett attorney: Attackers may have been in whiteface

Jussie Smollett’s attorney said on NBC’s “Today” that the two Nigerian brothers who say they were paid by the “Empire” actor to attack him may have been in whiteface.

“He only saw one of the attackers. One of them he didn’t see. He saw one through a ski mask,” Tina Glandian told NBC’s Savannah Guthrie. “Again, he could not see their body. Everything was covered, and he had a full ski mask on except the area around the eyes.”

{mosads}“He did tell police … from what we saw, he thought it was pale skin or white or pale skin, was I think what he said,” she continued. “And that’s why he initially did have a hard time.”

Glandian said while she was “looking up the brothers,” she found a skit of one them in whiteface playing “The Joker” from the “Batman” series of comics and movies.

“Obviously, you can disguise that. You can put makeup on,” Glandian said. “There is, interestingly enough, a video. You know, I think police had minimal investigation in this case, it took me only five minutes to Google. You know, I was looking up the brothers, and one of the videos that showed up actually was of the brothers in whiteface doing a joker monologue with white makeup on him. So, it’s not implausible.”

The claim comes two days after all 16 felony charges were suddenly dropped against the 36-year-old actor, who police said staged the Chicago attack.

Smollett claimed to police that two white men had attacked him in the early morning hours of Jan 22. He also said the men wore “Make America Great Again” hats and attempted to tie a rope around his neck while pouring an unknown chemical substance on him.

Video then surfaced of two Nigerian men purchasing the hats, rope and the chemical substance at a Chicago convenience store. Checks from Smollett to the two men, who worked with Smollett on “Empire,” were also turned over to police.  Smollett’s attorney said the men were paid for personal training purposes.

President Trump in an early morning tweet on Thursday called the case an “embarrassment” and said the FBI and Department of Justice (DOJ) would investigate.

“FBI & DOJ to review the outrageous Jussie Smollett case in Chicago,” Trump wrote to his more than 59 million followers.

“It is an embarrassment to our Nation!” he added.
