Trump spoke to The Washington Post for a profile on Dobbs, saying he listens to the host's thoughts on border security, something the White House has emphasized as a major issue in recent months amid record numbers of migrants being apprehended for crossing the border.

“Lou has a very strong opinion on the border, and I do listen to that opinion,” Trump told the Post.

“I think he respects what I’m doing, and I respect the job he does,” the president added. “He really gets the word out. There’s no question about it.”

Stephen Bannon, the president's former chief strategist, also told the Post that Dobbs's relationship with the president transcended those of other cable news hosts and conservative commentators deemed to be allies of the White House.

“While the president and Lou are friendly, it’s not like his relationship with a lot of other people in the media who like him,” Bannon, formerly head of the far-right Breitbart News, told the Post.

“This is about policy. They’re completely in sync on immigration and trade and what that all means for wages and how the Republican elite has failed,” Bannon added.

Trump has offered public support for Dobbs often on social media, referring to the cable news host as "the great Lou Dobbs" and frequently urging his millions of Twitter followers to watch the Trump-friendly programming.

"'Prosperity is returning. Donald Trump is doing exactly what he said he would do as a candidate, now as the most effective president, the most successful president, in modern American history.' Thank you to the great Lou Dobbs!" Trump wrote in July of last year, quoting Dobbs.

He also cited Dobbs's advice for special counsel Robert MuellerRobert (Bob) Swan MuellerSpeier says impeachment inquiry shows 'very strong case of bribery' by Trump Gowdy: I '100 percent' still believe public congressional hearings are 'a circus' Comey: Mueller 'didn't succeed in his mission because there was inadequate transparency' MORE later that year, writing, "'The Dems are the ones who should be investigated.' Thank you Lou, so true!"

As for Dobbs, a friend of the Fox Business host told the Post that Dobbs is aware that his program has become largely devoted to the president, while noting that he "doesn't care."

"He’s at the end of his career, and he’s going to do what he wants to do," the person said.
