Watergate reporter on Russia: 'I’ve been saying for a while there’s a coverup going on'

One of the journalists who reported on the Watergate scandal for The Washington Post responded to a new report that the FBI has information indicating President Trump's associates may have coordinated with Russia, calling it part of a "coverup."

"Well, I’ve been saying for a while that there’s a coverup going on here," Carl Bernstein said on CNN after it released its report on the information from FBI officials that Trump associates may have worked with Russian operatives to release damaging information targeting Democratic nominee Hillary ClintonHillary Diane Rodham ClintonSanders expected to announce exploratory committee next week Bernie Sanders records announcement video ahead of possible 2020 bid Overnight Defense: Trump declares border emergency | .6B in military construction funds to be used for wall | Trump believes Obama would have started war with North Korea | Pentagon delivers aid for Venezuelan migrants MORE's campaign.

"The coverup is among those who worked in the Trump campaign and associates of Trump, and it’s now becoming much more clear what it is that they have been concealing, which are these contacts, which revolve around leaked emails from [Clinton campaign chairman John] Podesta's account."

Bernstein called on the White House to ask for a full investigation into potential coordination instead of "pushing back" against the probe.

"What we’re seeing is pushback, smoke screens, an attempt to keep away from what really happened here by the president of the United States, by [press secretary] Sean Spicer, and that raises a whole set of additional questions," he said.

Bernstein recalled President Nixon's Watergate scandal and said the "heroes" of the scandal were the Republicans in Congress.

"The heroes of Watergate were really Republicans. They were Republicans in the House and the Senate who wanted this investigated to the bottom: What did the president know and when did he know it," he said. "That’s what we’re not seeing here. We’re not seeing it from the Republicans on the Hill who are consumed by supposedly looking for leaks."
