A California history professor has been placed on leave for tweeting that President Trump “must hang.”
Lars Maischak is on paid leave from his role as a lecturer and researcher at Fresno State University and will spend the rest of the spring semester off-campus, the school announced Tuesday, according to multiple reports.
"To save American democracy, Trump must hang. The sooner and the higher, the better. #TheResistance #DeathToFascism," Maischak tweeted in February to his then-28 followers.
The tweet went unnoticed until Breitbart News surfaced it in a story last week.
Maischak’s Twitter account has since been deleted.
The professor told the Fresno Bee his tweets “felt cathartic at the time to write them down.”
“With 28 followers on Twitter at the time, I never expected them to be read by anyone but a close circle of acquaintances who would know to place them in their context,” he said.
“To treat Twitter as of no more consequence than a journal was a poor decision.”
An online petition is calling for the lecturer to be fired. As of Wednesday, it had not reached it's goal of 1,500 signatures.
"Fresno State understands the deep concerns that have been shared as a result of personal comments made by Professor Lars Maischak, who is a lecturer in the History Department at Fresno State," the university said in an initial statement last week following outrage in response to the tweet resurfacing.
"Professor Maischak's personal views and commentary, with its inclusion of violent and threatening language, is obviously inconsistent with the core values of our University."
The university also said the FBI and Secret Service were investigating Maischak's tweet, according to the Fresno Bee.
