GOP rep's 10-year-old son was at practice when shooting broke out

The young son of Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) was at the congressional baseball game practice early Wednesday when a shooter targeted lawmakers and staffers, Sen. "Joe Barton's boy, 10-year-old boy was here ... and we got him in the dugout and put him under the bench," Flake told reporters.

The shooting occurred at a field in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Alexandria, Va.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) is in stable condition after being shot.

Scalise was one of several people shot at the practice, where it is believed a single gunman fired as many as 50 shots at lawmakers and aides who scrambled for cover. 

Police in Alexandria said the suspect is in custody and is not a threat.

Multiple lawmakers tweeted that their thoughts and prayers were with those impacted by the shooting.
