Disclosure report shows Trump earned $40M in 2017 from D.C. hotel

President Trump, according to his financial disclosure report, earned $40 million last year from his company’s hotel in Washington, D.C., USA Today reports.

Trump earned $40.7 million in the 2017 calendar year. He earned $19.6 million from January 2016 to mid-April 2017, according to a previous financial report.

More than $350,000 in campaign funds contributed to the hotel’s revenue, 60 percent coming from events hosted by the Republican National Committee, according to an analysis by USA Today.

The Trump International Hotel in D.C. opened in October 2016, less than one mile from the White House, and has become a legal headache for the president as a number of critics have said earnings from the hotel violate the emoluments cause in the Constitution.

The clause bars the president from accepting gifts or payment from foreign governments without congressional approval.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and other Democratic lawmakers filed a lawsuit against Trump last June, arguing the president had violated the clause.

Blumenthal argues that Trump profits from foreign states through his ownership of the D.C. hotel and Trump World Tower in New York City.

Past customers of the hotel include lobbyists or government officials from Malaysia, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, according to USA Today.

The government of the Philippines will hold its Independence Day celebration at the hotel on June 12. The event comes as Trump’s administration is considering a new trade deal with the country.

The Treasury Department confirmed in February that it received a donation from the Trump Organization for the profits that the hotels supposedly made from foreign governments.

Several business interests and lobbyist groups like the American Petroleum Institute — a major oil lobby group — have held events at the property.

The hotel has also become a destination for dissidents and protests against Trump and his policies.

The emoluments clause and a “crime scene” warning are just some of the projections that have appeared on the side of the hotel since it opened.
