13-year-old dies after being attacked by classmates

A 13-year-old Texas middle school student has died after briefly falling into a coma following a fight with classmates on her walk home from school late last week, her family announced Wednesday.

Kashala Francis was walking home from Attucks Middle School in Houston last Thursday when two other teenage girls allegedly attacked her, with one kicking her on the head. The incident was captured on video, and at least one of the people involved can be heard laughing as Francis is on the ground being repeatedly struck in the head.

"I can see these girls kicking her in the head while other children are laughing at her," Francis's mother, Mamie Jackson, told ABC station KTRK-TV in Houston through tears during an interview.

Jackson said her daughter originally appeared fine after the incident and insisted she felt OK despite a bruise, but later during the weekend appeared weak and started complaining of a headache at a family member's house.

"I drove over and I told her get up. I said 'Get up, Kashala.' She kept saying, 'Mama, my head hurt,' so she laid down," Jackson told KTRK-TV.

Francis became unconscious and was rushed to a local children's hospital, where doctors found a previously undiscovered tumor in the back of her head. Jackson said doctors are currently unsure whether the fight made her daughter's tumor worse.

"We found out she has a large tumor in the back of her head, and she had fluid buildup in her brain," Jackson said.

Francis died Wednesday morning after doctors attempted multiple surgeries to address her head injury and tumor. Her family has launched a Facebook page to remember their daughter.

Police told ABC News they are investigating the incident as a homicide as they await an autopsy to determine the cause of death. No arrests have been made so far.
