Multiple people were injured in a shooting at a mall near Milwaukee on Friday, according to authorities.

Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber said in a statement that seven adults and one teenager were injured and transported to a local hospital. The extent of their injuries is still unknown.

The shooter remains at large, Weber said, and early witness statements indicate the shooter is in his 20s or 30s. Investigators are still working to nail down his identity.

Police tweeted around 4:30 p.m. local time that they were responding to the Mayfair mall in Wauwatosa, Wis., with a police dispatcher reportedly describing a "very active situation" there.

An officer at a nearby hospital said that at least eight people were transported with injuries, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

The shooting prompted a massive response by authorities, according to local media, with tactical units reportedly searching the mall and evacuating individuals who had sheltered in place.

The Journal Sentinel reported that more than three dozen police cars and 100 officers and agents from local and federal agencies were spotted outside the mall on Friday evening.
