Police arrest man they say beat officer with American flag during Capitol riot

An Arkansas man has been arrested by police after he allegedly beat a police officer with an American flag during the riot at the Capitol last week.

Videos of Peter Stager circulated on social media showing him saying, "Death is the only remedy for what's in that building," in reference to the Capitol, and reportedly hitting an officer with a flag pole with the American flag attached, according to CBS station THV11.

A confidential source came forward and identified Stager as the man seen in the video, and law enforcement officials have said that they believe Stager is the man in the video after comparing his driver's license photo with the footage taken on Jan. 6, the outlet noted.

Federal court documents identify the officer as a member of the Washington's Metropolitan Police Department and state that the officer was standing guard at the entrance to the Capitol Building when he was pulled down the stairs and attacked by the mob, THV11 reported.

Stager reportedly told police that he originally believed he was striking a member of antifa during the incident and not a police officer, though the affidavit states that the officer had "Metropolitan Police" visible across his back, according to the outlet.

He is currently facing civil disorder charges and faces up to five years in prison, FOX5 reported.
