Sanders applauds scientists ‘fighting back’ with planned DC march
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) took to Facebook to throw his support behind scientists who are planning to gather in Washington, D.C., to march.
“Science is not Democratic or Republican, progressive or conservative. Science is science. There are no ‘alternative facts,'” Sanders wrote Thursday. “A modern society cannot survive unless decisions are made on evidence-based research. Congratulations to those scientists and researchers who are fighting back.”
Sanders’s post on Facebook included a link to an article about the planned scientists march with the headline “War on Facts Sparks Momentum for Scientists’ March on Washington.”
Sanders campaigned in the Democratic primary in part on his environmental policy plans to deal with climate change and pushed for an aggressive plan to combat it in the Democratic Party’s platform.
A movement of scientists has grown in response to the Trump administration’s skepticism of climate change for a “Scientists March on Washington.”
Organizers have not yet released a date for a proposed march but have gained support on social media platforms as they update their followers about plans and solicit volunteers.
This week, Trump issues a ban on employees of the Environmental Protection Agency from posting updates on social media or speaking with the media. A gag order, which has since been lifted, was also placed on the research arm of the Department of Agriculture.
