"Trump Asia trip a flop: POTUS acts like a lap dog to Xi and China, but talks tough to our friends in Southeast Asia," Schumer tweeted Sunday morning, referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"Presidency by misadventure."

He made the remark after Trump last week blamed past administrations, not Beijing, for "unfair" trade practices, offering a starkly different tone from the rhetoric he used during his campaign.

Trump said during an event last week in Beijing that he doesn't put blame on China for what he described as "one-sided and unfair" trade practices, noting he gives "China great credit."

"I don't blame China," he said. "Who can blame a country that is able to take advantage of another country for the benefit of its citizens? I give China great credit.”

On Saturday, Trump said Xi told him he plans to implement new sanctions against North Korea.
