Trudeau praises McCain as an 'American patriot and hero'

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised Sen. “Senator John McCain was an American patriot and hero whose sacrifices for his country, and lifetime of public service, were an inspiration to millions,” Trudeau tweeted. “Canadians join Americans tonight in celebrating his life and mourning his passing.”

"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!" Trump tweeted.

McCain, a giant of the Senate, died Saturday afternoon following a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

His family announced Friday that he had chosen to discontinue medical treatment for the cancer, saying the “progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age” had rendered “their verdict.”

McCain survived years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam before rising to become a giant of the Senate and a leading actor on the political stage for decades.
