Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) on Tuesday thanked President TrumpDonald John Trump Trump responds to calls to tear down monuments with creation of 'National Garden' of statues Trump: Children are taught in school to 'hate their own country' Trump accuses those tearing down statues of wanting to 'overthrow the American Revolution' MORE for endorsing his Republican opponent in the midterm election.

"Thank you," Menendez wrote in a tweet, responding to Trump's endorsement earlier Tuesday of Republican candidate Bob Hugin.

Trump wrote in a tweet Tuesday morning that Hugin "would be a Great Senator from New Jersey."

"Bob Hugin, successful all of his life, would be a Great Senator from New Jersey. He has my complete and total Endorsement! Get out and Vote for Bob," Trump tweeted.

Menendez often attacked Hugin over his ties to Trump, who is unpopular in New Jersey. Hugin was the finance chairman of Trump's New Jersey campaign in 2016 and donated to the then-candidate.

Polling before Tuesday showed Menendez with the advantage in the race, but it has been closer than once expected as his campaign has been dogged by Menendez's 2015 indictment on bribery and fraud charges.

Election handicappers at The Cook Political Report rate the race as a toss-up. FiveThirtyEight's Senate forecast rated the race as likely Democrat, giving Menendez better than a 90 percent chance to retain his seat.
