Police in Ohio say three people were killed when a gunman opened at Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati's Fountain Square on Thursday morning. The suspect was also killed.

Cincinnati police said five other people were wounded.

"Three or four officers responded and engaged the shooter," police added on Twitter.

The incident occurred in the lobby area and loading dock of the building, according to police updates on social media. Police made no mention of any search for a possible second attacker, but warned that the area would remain on lockdown as the scene was investigating.

"@CincyPD investigating active shooter/officer involved shooting incident at Fifth Third Bank at 511 Walnut Street in lobby and loading dock. More details to follow. Media staging area will be forthcoming. Ft. Square and surrounding area will be closed to foot traffic," police wrote.

"It started out apparently with an active shooter at the Fifth Third tower, there was an officer intervention and from there now it's just victims and things like that," a police officer told a local CNN affiliate.

A Cincinnati city councilman called the incident "terrible" on Twitter and asked for prayers for the city.

"Terrible shooting incident in the heart of our city this morning. Multiple shot, and tragically there are fatalities. Details still emerging. Pray for our city," P.G. Sittenfeld wrote.

"Update (but still fluid): 5 shot, including shooter, who now being told is in critical but not deceased. Police & Fire doing exemplary job," he added. "What a sick, tragic way for this day to begin. The scourge of gun violence leaves only loss."
