An Illinois state lawmaker reportedly drew laughs on Friday when he used an egg to demonstrate "your brain on drugs" during debate over a bill to legalize recreational marijuana in the state.
State Rep. Anthony DeLuca (D) cracked an egg into a frying pan during his speaking time, according to local news station WQAD-TV, a reference to an old anti-drug commercial that compared substance abuse's effects on the brain to cooking a raw egg.
"I want to leave an image for you," DeLuca reportedly said while holding the egg. "You see this? This is your brain. There it is folks. This is your brain on drugs."
He received some laughter and applause after the demonstration. He also received some criticism, with one lawmaker calling the demonstration "nonsense."
State Rep. Bob Morgan (D) called the display a waste of eggs "that should have been used to make a souffle or something instead of making a ridiculous point that was outdated for 30 years," WQAD reported.
Despite DeLuca's efforts, the Illinois House passed the bill 66-47. It was previously passed by the state Senate, and Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker is expected to sign it.
