New York’s state Senate on Wednesday approved an automatic voter registration bill, sending the legislation to the full state assembly.

Automatic voter registration (AVR) would make registering to vote an “opt-out” process rather than an “opt-in” process. Interacting with state agencies, like the Department of Motor Vehicles, would automatically initiate the voter registration process.

{mosads}AVR efforts have been catching on in a number of states ahead of the 2020 election cycle.

Five years ago, no states had AVR, but now many are adopting it.

New MexicoNevada and Massachusetts all passed similar measures in the last year.

A study released earlier this year by the Brennan Center for Justice found that AVR has led to increased voter rolls in every state where it has been implemented.
