Weak tremors could be felt in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose, while minor damage was reported closer to the epicenter. Officials said they do not expect to receive any reports of major structural damage.

The earthquake occurred shortly before the 30th anniversary of the 6.9 magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake that killed 63 people and injured thousands.

Earlier this month, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake hit just south of San Fransisco.
