An Oregon man has been charged with attempted murder and hate crimes after being accused of breaking into a motel office and attacking the 70-year-old owner, who is an Indian immigrant.

James Lamb, 53, was charged Tuesday with attempted murder, two counts of bias crime, assault, burglary, strangulation, menacing and criminal mischief, NBC News reports.

Lamb was staying at the Hub Motel in Redmond, Ore., on New Year's Eve when he broke into the office and began attacking the owner.

The woman suffered broken bones and is still hospitalized, though she is expected to survive, according to the network.

In a statement, the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office said: "The grand jury charged Mr. Lamb with bias crimes based on his statements regarding the victim's country of origin being India and his expressed desire to rid America of people like her."
