Two police officers were killed in a shooting Sunday morning in Honolulu while a suspect also reportedly set multiple fires.

Hawaii News Now reported that a third officer was critically injured in the shooting, which occurred around 10 a.m. near the city's popular Diamond Head location.

At least four homes were destroyed by fires set during the shooting, according to the news outlet. Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell (D) called the incident an "unprecedented tragedy" for the state.

“This is an unprecedented tragedy for not only the City and County of Honolulu but the entire state of Hawaii,” Caldwell tweeted. “I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the two officers as well as the entire Honolulu Police Department.”

"Our office is in communication with the Honolulu Police Department as more details about the circumstances around this horrific event come to light. Our hearts go out to the first responders who are on the scene as this event unfolds," he added.

The incident reportedly started when the suspect, Jerry Hanel, stabbed his landlord and opened fire on responding officers after the landlord attempted to evict him at his residence.

Police say Hamel likely died when his home and others were destroyed by the fire.
