The deputy was rushed to the hospital and is in serious but stable condition, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office posted a tweet that alerted residents about the active shooter Wednesday, urging locals to shelter in place.

The department could not immediately provide a suspect description, The Times reported.
