The mother of a transgender boy in Texas went viral this week after making an emotional plea to state lawmakers about a bill that would make it illegal for parents to provide gender-affirming health care procedures for their children.
Under the bill, parents aiding their transgender children in receiving medical care, including puberty suppressant drugs, medical procedures and hormone replacement therapy, would be labeled abusers and their actions would be considered a felony if the child is under the age of 18, according to Mediaite.
Amber Briggle spoke out against the legislation during a hearing with the Texas Senate Committee on State Affairs.
“I’m terrified to be here today,” Briggle told the committee. “I’m afraid that by speaking here today that my words will be used against me should S.B. 1646 or S.B. 1311 pass, and my sweet son whom I love more than life itself will be taken from me.”
“When my son was four years old, he asked me if scientists could turn him into a boy,” Briggle continued.
“I only knew that he wasn’t like most girls his age and that something inside him was hurting,” she said. “Like many of you, I thought he was asking for surgery, and I freaked out.”
Briggle said surgery cannot be performed on minors, pushing back at Republicans supporting the bill who cited surgical procedures as a reason to prohibit gender-affirming health care for minors. She said her son is now 13 years old and “the most popular boy in the seventh grade."
She stated that being able to be a supportive parent to her son by affirming him has allowed him to be an active and loved member of multiple communities.
“Taking that support away from him, or worse, taking him away from his family because we broke the law to provide that support — will have devastating and heartbreaking consequences,” she said while holding back tears.
“If this bill becomes law, that, senators, is child abuse, and I promise I will call every single one of you every time a transgender child dies from suicide to remind you that their lives could have been saved, but you chose not to.”
