Catholic school hires lacrosse coach in same-sex marriage after backlash

An Illinois Catholic school has extended another offer to a lacrosse coach after receiving backlash from the community for rescinding its decision to hire the coach due to the coach's same-sex marriage, ABC affiliate WLS-TV reported.

Benet Academy’s Board of Directors announced on Tuesday that they have extended their offer to Amanda Kammes to be the school’s women's lacrosse head coach. She has accepted the position.

“The Board has heard from members of the Benet community on all sides of this issue over the past several days. We had an honest and heartfelt discussion on this very complex issue at our meeting,” Benet Academy said in a statement, according to WLS-TV.

“Going forward we will look for opportunities for dialogue in our community about how we remain true to our Catholic mission while meeting people where they are in their personal journey through life. For now, we hope that this is the first step in healing the Benet community."

The school’s board rescinded their initial offer to Kammes after she wrote down her wife as her emergency contact, according to WGN9.

The announcement of the school's about-face on the issue came a day after a protest in defense of Kammes happened outside of the school’s campus, WGN Chicago reported.

"It's definitely not over," Benet’s assistant women’s lacrosse coach, Colleen Savell, told WLS.

"We definitely got what we wanted with Amanda being reinstated, but there is still more to be done and more change that needs to happen."

Kammes, a former student at Benet, said in a statement that she hopes LGBTQ people at different Catholic institutions have love and support from their communities, WLS reported.

“To my classmates, fellow Benet alumni, current students, parents, and most importantly, the girls lacrosse team – I am truly humbled at the outpouring of support," she said. "This community is full of highly intelligent, driven, socially aware and passionate people who will always stand up for what is right. I am encouraged, ready to move forward, and coach Benet’s girls’ lacrosse team to success on and off the field. GO REDWINGS!”
