Dem senator: Trump a ‘puppet’ for outside groups making Supreme Court pick
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said Sunday that President Trump has become a “puppet” for the Federalist Society and other outside groups in picking the next Supreme Court justice.
“The president’s outsourced his decision to the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation. It is extraordinary,” Blumenthal said on ABC’s “This Week.”
“I’ve never seen a president of the United States, in effect, make himself a puppet of outside groups, and choose from a group of right-wing fringe ideologues that are … on this list,” he added, referring to a list of 25 potential justices from which Trump has said he’ll make his selection.

Leonard Leo, who serves as the executive vice president of the Federalist Society, has taken a leave from the organization to assist Trump in selecting a replacement for retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Blumenthal and other Democrats have sounded alarms that the future of Roe v. Wade is at stake in the looming confirmation battle.
He noted that Trump said on the campaign trail he would seek to appoint anti-abortion judges who would likely vote to overturn the law, which guarantees a woman’s right to the procedure.
Trump is scheduled to announce his pick to replace Kennedy on Monday night. He conducted interviews last week with at least seven candidates.
