Hogan says it’s ‘insane’ anyone could watch Jan. 6 and believe it was ‘just tourists looking at statues’

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) said on Sunday that it is “insane” anyone could watch footage of the Jan. 6 riot and think it “was just tourists looking at statues,” apparently taking a jab at one House Republican who compared the violent event last year to “a normal tourist visit.”

“Look, let’s face it. There’s been an amazing amount of disinformation that’s been spread over the past year. And many people are consuming that disinformation and believing it as if it’s fact,” Hogan told “State of the Union” co-anchor Dana Bash on CNN.

“To think that the violent protesters who attacked the Capitol, our seat of democracy, on Jan. 6 was just tourists looking at statues — it’s insane that anyone could watch that on television and believe that’s what happened,” he added.

Hogan’s comments appeared to take a jab at Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.), who last year downplayed the seriousness of the Jan. 6 riot as a mob of supporters of former President Trump ransacked the Capitol and tried to stop Congress from certifying the 2020 presidential election.

“Watching the TV footage of those who entered the Capitol and walked through Statuary Hall showed people in an orderly fashion staying between the stanchions and ropes taking videos and pictures,” Clyde said in May. “You know, if you didn’t know the TV footage was a video from Jan. 6, you’d think it was a normal tourist visit.”

Bash asked Hogan if he believed American democracy would prevail given that baseless claims over the 2020 election were so ingrained within his party and had given rise to the Capitol riot.

“That’s one of the reasons why I continue to speak up and tell the truth about what happened, because I think it’s critically important. I mean, it’s, frankly, it’s crazy that that many people believe that, things that just simply aren’t true, that they believe a different version of reality,” Hogan said.
