Rep.-elect Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.-08)

Raja Krishnamoorthi is keeping Illinois’s 8th Congressional District in the Democratic column.

Krishnamoorthi defeated Republican Pete DiCianni in the general election to replace Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D), who ran successfully for Senate.

It was Krishnamoorthi’s second bid to win the safely Democratic seat in Chicago’s suburbs. He ran in 2012 but lost to Duckworth in the primary.

A son of Indian immigrant parents, Krishnamoorthi was born in India and grew up in Peoria, Ill. He graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and went on to earn his law degree from Harvard Law School.

As an attorney, Krishnamoorthi clerked for a federal judge in Chicago. He later served as issues director on President Obama’s 2004 Senate campaign, and he has worked in several state government posts.

He’s also a successful businessman and currently president of Sivananthan Labs and Episolar Inc.

Krishnamoorthi lives in Schaumburg, Ill., with his wife, Priya, a doctor. They have three children.
