Carlos Curbelo, the son of Cuban exiles, ousted freshman Rep. Joe Garcia (D) to put the Miami-metro 26th District in the GOP column. Garcia was seen as one of Democrats’ most vulnerable members due to a number of ethics issues.

The 34-year-old Curbelo is a Miami native and attended the University of Miami. After graduating, he founded Capitol Gains, a public relations and media firm in South Florida. He was named state director for then-Sen. George LeMieux (R) in 2009. In 2010, he was appointed to the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization, and most recently was elected to the Miami-Dade County School Board.

Curbelo is a co-founder of Centre Court Charities, a nonprofit basketball league for high school students. He lives in Kendall with his wife and two children.
