Republican Rick Allen ousted Rep. John Barrow (D), in Georgia’s most contested House race, delivering a blow to Blue Dog Democrats. Barrow, a five-term incumbent, was the last white House Democrat representing the Deep South, surviving previous conservative challenges in his red-leaning district.

Allen survived a tough five-way GOP primary before heading to the general election.

A successful small-business owner, Allen started R.W. Allen & Associates, a construction company in 1976. In 2008, Allen received the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce Small Business Person of the Year Award.

He is a member of Trinity on The Hill Methodist Church and resides in Augusta with his wife, Robin. The couple has two children.
