Tom MacArthur is keeping retiring Rep. Jon Runyan’s (N.J.) seat in the GOP column. Democrats had hopes of taking the South Jersey district that President Obama carried twice, but MacArthur defeated Aimee Belgard in the general election after one of the most competitive races in the country.

It was a long fight for MacArthur, who first had to fend off a challenge from Tea Party favorite Steve Lonegan in the GOP primary. A businessman, MacArthur started out as an insurance adjustor before launching his own company, York Risk Services Group Inc. in 1999, serving as chairman and CEO.

MacArthur and his wife, Debbie, have been active in charity work, creating and funding the St. Peter’s Sandy Relief Fund to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy. They also run In God’s Hands Charitable Foundation in memory of their daughter Gracie, who died at the age of 11. The charity funds a variety of programs from helping wounded veterans to children affected by AIDS in Africa.
