Dave Brat shocked the political world  when he defeated then-House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the district’s Republican primary. Brat went on to best Democratic nominee Jack Trammell for a seat in the House and will be serving in public office for the first time.

Brat attended Hope College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration; Princeton Theological Seminary, where he received a master’s degree in divinity; and American University, where he earned his Ph.D. in economics. He has worked as a consultant for the World Bank and served as the chairman of the economics department at Randolph-Macon College.

Prior to running for Congress, Brat was a special legislative assistant to Virginia state Sen. Walter Stosch and served on the Virginia Economic Advisory Council. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates in 2011.
