Wendy’s is investigating claims of a possible credit card breach at some of its locations.

“We have received this month from our payment industry contacts reports of unusual activity involving payment cards at some of our restaurant locations,” a spokesman told security blogger Brian Krebs, who first reported the possible breach.

Reports indicated that fraudulent charges may have occurred elsewhere after the cards were legitimately used at some branches of the fast-food chain, according to the official.

The fast-food chain says it has hired a security firm and an investigation is ongoing, but that it is too soon to know how widespread the incident was or whether it has been contained, according to Krebs.

The spokesman said the incidents under scrutiny occurred late last year.

"Until this investigation is completed, it is difficult to determine with certainty the nature or scope of any potential incident," the company told The Associated Press.

The Wendy’s chain includes around 6,500 company-owned and franchised restaurants worldwide.
