Official Artyom Sychyov reportedly claimed the hackers had attempted to steal an even larger sum — 5 billion rubles.

The Russian Federal Security Service claimed Friday that foreign intelligence operations were planning to destabilize the country’s financial system starting on Dec. 5. But there is no indication the central bank theft is connected to those claims.
