The Federal Trade Commission announced a $25,000 contest to boost the security of household internet-connected devices.

Consumer devices on the so-called internet of things (IoT) have notoriously weak security, which can be dangerous to user privacy or allow them to be used in other cyberattacks.

The IoT Home Inspector Challenge will award a $25,000 grand prize and three $3,000 honorable mention prizes for tools "that would address security vulnerabilities caused by out-of-date software in IoT devices."

The contest will accept entries until May 22. Winners will be announced two months later.
