US launches airstrike in Somalia

The U.S. military on Monday launched an airstrike against al-Shabaab, al Qaeda’s affiliate in Somalia, according to the Pentagon.

{mosads}The airstrike targeted a senior al-Shabaab leader, said Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby, and took place in the vicinity of Saakow, Somalia.

It is unclear whether the attack was successful. 

“At this time, we do not assess there to be any civilian or bystander casualties,” Kirby said. “We are assessing the results of the operation and will provide additional information, when appropriate, as details become available.”
