A pair of Navy F/A-18 fighter jets on Thursday crashed off the coast of North Carolina, according to officials from the Coast Guard and Navy.

A Coast Guard official said its command center was notified at 10:30 a.m. EDT that the planes had collided and four people were in the water 25 miles off the coast of Oregon Inlet, N.C.

The Coast Guard said that a commercial fishing vessel had rescued the four survivors and a Jayhawk helicopter based in North Carolina hoisted and took them to a hospital in Norfolk, Va.

One official told The Hill that the extent of injuries is unknown.

The Navy said that the two aircraft involved in the "in-flight mishap" were on a routine training mission.

An investigation into the cause of the accident will be carried out, the Navy said.
