Russian President Vladimir Putin’s press secretary criticized the U.S. response to the alleged Russian interference in the presidential election, accusing the White House of purposefully demonizing the country instead of considering the results of the election.

“It is much easier to spread the image of some devil enemy and to demonize, for example, your and my country and our leader, our President Putin,” said Dmitry Peskov, as reported by the Tass News Agency on Thursday.

“It is much easier to be demonizing than, for example, to consider the presidency results,” he added.

{mosads}Putin’s press secretary argued that the allegations against Russia are false, calling them “absolute tales.”

“It is absolutely absurd — all those tales about cyberattacks by Russians, absolute tales,” he said.

The Russian official also said that President Obama and Putin discussed the issue over the phone and that the U.S. could “not prove those accusations.”

Peskov also blasted the media for being critical of Russia, stating that Moscow has developed methods of withstanding media attacks from the U.S.

“Russia learned how to counter media threats, and does so rather straightforwardly, yet consistently,” he said. “The most important thing is to get the message across, using all the achievements of modern technology, not to settle for fake news or hoaxes, but to explain the truth and never be shy about the veracity.”

Russia has previously been critical of the U.S. press and has called for the New York Daily News to apologize after the paper published an opinion column that it says justified the assassination of the Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov.
